Kaweco's winter releases are nearly here, and this year's are a treat for anyone who likes a pen with a bit of colour to it. The official launch is Wednesday 14 October, and you can pre-order now.
Lunar Sport: the last two colours
The Lunar Sport arrived earlier this year in green, and then blue. Light Purple and Shadow Purple are the third and final pair, and they complete the series.
What makes the Lunar different from every other Kaweco Sport is the finish. It's an iridescent pearl that changes as the pen moves in the light, so the colour you see in your hand is never quite the colour you saw a second ago.
- Light Purple is the quiet one: a pale, soft mauve with a gentle shimmer.
- Shadow Purple is the dramatic one: a deep purple that shifts towards green as the light crosses it.
Underneath, it's the Sport that Kaweco have been making since 1911: small enough for a pocket when it's closed, a proper full-size pen once the cap is posted, and light enough to forget you're carrying it. Both colours come in all five versions:
- Fountain pen, with a German-made steel medium nib
- Rollerball
- Ballpoint
- 0.7mm mechanical pencil
- 3.2mm clutch pencil, the one I point sketchers towards

Piston Sport AL in Bordeaux
The other arrival is for the fountain pen people. The Piston Sport AL is Kaweco's pocket piston filler in an aluminium body, and the new Bordeaux is a rich deep red with gold details and a tinted ink window.
If you haven't used a piston filler before, the idea is simple. There are no cartridges and no converter: you dip the nib in a bottle, turn the end of the pen, and it draws the ink straight into the barrel. It holds around 1ml, which is more than a standard cartridge, and the window shows you when it's time to refill. It also opens up every bottled ink on the shelf, including the colours that never come in cartridges.
It comes two ways: the pen on its own, for anyone who already has a favourite ink, or as a Starter Set with a 32ml bottle of Royal Blue so it's ready to fill straight out of the tin. To my mind it's the Christmas present for the pen lover who has everything.

Kaweco release everything worldwide on the same day, so nothing leaves the shop before Wednesday 14 October. Pre-orders are sent out, or ready to collect from us in Belfast, from that date.
