Lucy Ashley is a contemporary British painter, born in Lancashire, who works mainly in oils, using palette knife and brush together to build up thick, textured surfaces. She isn't after a photographic likeness of a place. She wants the feeling of it: late sun across a meadow, a sandy path dropping down to the sea, a field edge thick with wildflowers. She paints the British countryside, its coastlines and beaches, and the light that moves across them.

All that impasto catches the real light in the room, so her paintings shift through the day as you live with them. They're calm, warm pictures that leave room for your own memories of a walk or a summer evening.
