POSCA brought out this Portrait Tones set because portrait artists were tired of trying to mix believable skin tones from the standard colour range. Eight markers, eight harmonised shades from pale beige through to deep brown, all in the PC-5M medium bullet tip — the most versatile pen in the entire POSCA family. If you draw faces, illustrate characters, or work in lowbrow and street-art styles where flat opaque colour does the heavy lifting, this is the set that does the work for you.
Quirky fact: POSCA paint markers were originally developed in 1983 by Mitsubishi Pencil in Japan for industrial sign-writing on shop windows and metalwork. It was urban artists in Tokyo who first started using them on skateboards and trainers, and that one accidental crossover is the reason POSCA is now the unofficial standard for everything from gallery work by Sir Peter Blake to surfboard customisation on Bondi.
You get eight harmonised shades: Light Orange, Beige, Satin Pink, Powder Pink, Chestnut, Brown, Cacao Brown and Dark Brown. The paint is opaque water-based acrylic — it sits on top of any surface rather than soaking in, so it covers cleanly on dark paper, dyed card, kraft, wood and even acetate. The PC-5M tip is 1.8 to 2.5mm — wide enough to fill an area quickly, fine enough to outline a jawline or shade a cheekbone. Once dry it's waterproof and lightfast, so you can layer further colours on top without lifting what's underneath.
How to use: Shake the pen vigorously with the cap on (you'll hear the agitator ball rattle). Uncap, then press the nib down on scrap paper several times until paint flows into the tip. Lay down your lightest tones first — Light Orange, Beige and the pinks — then build up shadows with the Chestnut and Browns. POSCA dries quickly, so successive layers don't bleed. For blended skin tones, work wet-on-wet within seconds of application; for flat illustrative styles, let each layer dry before adding the next. The tip is reversible — pull it out with tweezers and flip it round when it wears.
