POSCA paint was developed in 1980s Japan for marking up industrial surfaces, before street artists and illustrators discovered the same opaque, water-based pigment worked just as beautifully on canvas, card and customised kit. Four decades on it's a fixture in studios, classrooms and sketchbooks the world over.
Every marker here is a PC-5M — the medium bullet tip POSCA call the most versatile in the range. The 1.8–2.5mm nib covers ground quickly but still turns a tidy line for lettering and detail, and because the paint is fully opaque a bright colour reads cleanly over black or any other dark ground. Water-based, low-odour and acid-free, it layers without muddying once dry.
Shake with the cap on, prime the tip on scrap paper until the paint flows, and you're away. Build colours up in dry layers, and on smooth surfaces wipe a mark off before it sets if you need to. Happy on paper, card, wood, stone, glass, metal, ceramic, canvas, fabric and most plastics.
