A quirky bit of trivia - the lead is a proprietary Staedtler formulation called "ABS" (Anti Break System) where the pigment core is wrapped in a softer protective layer. Drop one on a tile floor and it survives; ordinary coloured-pencil leads shatter inside the barrel even when the wood doesn't visibly crack.
Practical description - Use them dry like a coloured pencil for outlines and detail. Press harder and the wax content gives you a crayon effect for blocks of solid colour. Add a wet brush and the colour dissolves into a watercolour wash. One pencil, three media - which means a child who's outgrown crayons but isn't quite ready for watercolour pans has a one-pack bridge between the two.
