The velvet flock means you can build up dense layers without the surface saturating, and the colour stays vibrant even after extensive blending. Multiple background colours in the pad - useful for working out which underpainting suits a particular subject before committing to a full sheet.
Best with soft pastel and pastel pencil. Charcoal also works. Avoid wet media - the velvet flock won't survive a wash.
