St. Paul's Beyond the Gold takes London's most familiar dome and declines to hand it over cleanly. The title puts something between the viewer and the cathedral, and the technique does the same: this is mixed media worked on board in Nigel Cooke's drip style, where the architecture of a city is described and partly let go of in the same gesture. Squared off at 91cm, it is built to hold a wall on its own.
Cooke was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, and reached full-time painting the long way round. He joined the Merchant Navy on leaving school and worked through a run of jobs before art became the living rather than the sideline. His cityscapes are mixed media on board throughout — not oils — and the drip is the signature that identifies them at a glance.
