About This Product

Rhythms of Westminster is a painting about movement through a city rather than a monument standing still in it. The title points at tempo — the repeated beat of traffic and crowd along one stretch of London — and Nigel Cooke builds it in mixed media on board, finishing in the drip style that has become his signature, so that a scene of constant motion is never quite pinned down.

Before painting full-time, Cooke spent years as a caricaturist: resident entertainer at Butlins, then his own concessions on Blackpool's Central Pier and Pleasure Beach, at the Trafford Centre in Manchester and at Alton Towers. Years spent catching a likeness fast, in front of an audience, is useful training for a cityscape that has to read from across a room.
