Most acrylic gesso absorbs oil paint too quickly — the oil sinks in before it has time to move, and you lose both glide and transparency. Michael Harding's Non-Absorbent Acrylic Gesso Primer addresses that directly: it seals the surface so that oil paint sits on top and responds the way it would on a traditionally prepared oil ground, without the weeks of drying time that linseed-oil grounds require.
The formulation creates a non-porous barrier between the support and the paint using acrylic chemistry that dries in hours rather than weeks, compatible with both rigid and flexible supports. The result handles more like a traditional oil ground than standard acrylic gesso does.
Available in two sizes (500ml and 1 litre) and multiple colours — White, Black, Clear, Neutral Grey 7, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Olive, and Titanium Buff — plus a Rapid Surface Developer (RSD) variant for working onto freshly primed surfaces. Colour-tinted grounds are useful for tonal underpainting or imprimatura work. Apply in 2–3 thin coats with a wide flat brush or foam roller, sanding lightly between coats with fine-grit paper for a smoother surface.
Suitable for canvas, linen, board, and MDF. Use under oil or alkyd paint only — not suitable as a ground for watercolour or gouache. Can be tinted with acrylic paint before application.
