Christian Hook won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 — the resulting commission, a portrait of Alan Cumming, now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland alongside work by Botticelli and Rembrandt. Born in Gibraltar and trained at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art, Hook is preoccupied with time and motion: the way a face or a figure exists across several instants simultaneously, each layer of transparent paint a different moment in a single image.
Mar de Luces — Sea of Lights — is one of Hook's most lyrical series titles, and the work earns it. Figurative in origin but almost abstracted in execution, the layers of transparent paint build an image of light on water that shifts and reforms as the viewer's eye travels across it. Hook grew up in Gibraltar, surrounded by the Mediterranean, and the sea has remained a recurring subject in work that is ostensibly about motion and time.
