A Sea of Sunflowers takes its title at its word: a panoramic 40 x 100 cm oil on canvas that stretches the meadow into a wide horizon of summer. Worked entirely with the palette knife, the surface is built from layered, textured strokes so the field reads less as a single bloom than as a tide of them rolling toward the light.
Kimberley Harris grew up in Colchester, Essex, and now paints from rural Suffolk, where the wide East Anglian skies feed her love of changing light. She came to oils relatively late, in 2014, after training in art and design and a spell in jewellery design, and the palette knife quickly became her whole language. 'The process of layering and blending the palette knife work to obtain the right tone, texture and light is so important to me,' she says.
