John Horsewell was born in Essex into a family of professional artists — his parents and grandfather all painted — and has worked in oils since school, finding early on that oil best allowed him to render the light and shadow that drives his practice. After a career in interior design he exhibited locally, then regionally, then across Manchester, Birmingham, and London, before committing to painting full time in 1978. His coastal and marine paintings are rich with the particular quality of light on water that only comes from years of looking at it directly.
