Gelli plates were developed in Pennsylvania by Joan Bess as a replacement for the traditional gelatin printing plate — cooked from scratch, kept refrigerated, prone to cracking and mould. The Gelli version uses mineral oil and proprietary binders to deliver the same tacky, ink-receptive surface with none of the upkeep. Treated reasonably, one of these will last you years.
To monoprint, roll acrylic or water-based block printing ink across the surface with a brayer, build up a composition using stencils, leaves, bubble wrap, lace, or any patterned object, then press paper onto the plate and pull. Each print is unique. The 8×10 is a good general-purpose plate for prints, mixed-media backgrounds, and book art, and it's the size most workshop tutors will assume you're using.
