Joan Bess developed the Gelli plate in Pennsylvania to replace the traditional gelatin printing plate, which had to be cooked from scratch, kept in the fridge, and replaced every few weeks when it cracked or grew mould. Her solution — a permanent surface made from mineral oil and proprietary binders — has the same tacky, ink-receptive feel as gelatin and survives indefinitely if treated reasonably.
Roll out acrylic or water-based block printing ink with a brayer, press in textures using stencils, found objects, fabric, or plant material, then lay paper onto the plate and lift the print. The square format is particularly good for layering — work the same plate inking through several pulls, varying paper, ink colour, or stencil between each, and you build a series of related but distinct prints quickly.
