Joan Bess created the Gelli plate in Pennsylvania to fix the problems of traditional gelatin printing plates — fragile, perishable, and a constant maintenance job. Mineral oil and proprietary binders give the modern Gelli plate the same tacky printing surface as gelatin, but indefinitely durable if you treat it reasonably. Cleans with soap and water, lives flat in its original packaging.
The larger format opens up techniques that don't really work at smaller sizes. Multi-stencil layering, ghost prints with strong contrast, hand-cut shapes pressed into wet ink, foliage from the garden as printing matrix — all easier to compose with room to spare. Roll out acrylic or water-based block printing ink with a brayer, build the surface, press paper onto the plate, lift. Each pull is unique. A good plate for gallery prints, exhibition pieces, and anyone who's outgrown their 8×10.
