Christian Hook won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 — the resulting commission, a portrait of Alan Cumming, now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland alongside work by Botticelli and Rembrandt. Born in Gibraltar and trained at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art, Hook is preoccupied with time and motion: the way a face or a figure exists across several instants simultaneously, each layer of transparent paint a different moment in a single image.
Electronica takes Hook's layered portrait technique into a more fragmented register, the subject partially dissolved into a field of mark-making and digital-era visual noise. The work reflects Hook's ongoing collaboration with scientists exploring synaesthesia — the experience of perceiving one sense through another — and asks whether a portrait can communicate feeling as directly as music or colour does.
