About the Work

BoxHead draws upon a vivid childhood memory from the artist’s early school years. During a kindergarten Halloween project, children created robot heads from cardboard boxes. While most abandoned their creations after the festivities, one boy continued to wear his long afterwards — to school each day, in the playground, to church, and even while sleeping at night.

The box became more than a costume; it became part of his identity.

Eventually, the boy’s mother destroyed the robot head, bringing the ritual to an abrupt end. This formative memory later inspired the conceptual foundations of Legion, becoming an enduring influence within Yates’ artistic imagination.
