Christian Hook won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 — the resulting commission, a portrait of Alan Cumming, now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland alongside work by Botticelli and Rembrandt. Born in Gibraltar and trained at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art, Hook is preoccupied with time and motion: the way a face or a figure exists across several instants simultaneously, each layer of transparent paint a different moment in a single image.
Akashik VII is an earlier work in Hook's Akashik series — and at £2,500 one of his most significant editions. The series explores the boundary between identity and motion, using transparent layers of paint to suggest a figure or face caught between states: not quite one thing, not quite another, and more truthful for it. Hook's interest in Cézanne's use of multiple viewpoints on a single subject is visible throughout; Akashik VII distils that interest into its most resolved form.
